The United Committee Manipur (UCM) President YK Dhiren on Sunday said the time has come for the Manipuri people to unite and develop a clear understanding of how to confront and withstand the changing geopolitical situation.
He was speaking at the Manipuri National Diaspora Meet 2026 held at Saheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala, Tripura, as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations marking 25 years of the United Committee Manipur.
The meet was attended by members of the Manipuri diaspora from Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. YK Dhiren participated in the programme as president, while Dr K. N. Chand, President of the MLCPCC, Assam, and a member of the Manipuri Language Advisory Board, served as moderator. The event was hosted by the Manipuri Council Tripura and the Tripura Manipuri Student–Youth Coordination Committee.
Addressing the gathering, YK Dhiren said the Silver Jubilee celebrations, which began on July 3, 2025, include a series of programmes organised at different locations. He said the Agartala meet was convened to bridge gaps in communication among Manipuris living across the northeastern states and to encourage a collective and united response to shared challenges. Despite living in different places, he noted, Manipuris continue to strive individually, and there is a need to work collectively to strengthen livelihoods and improve quality of life wherever they reside.
The programme also featured deliberations by Manipuri diaspora members and resource persons on a range of political and socio-economic issues. Key issues discussed included safeguarding the interests of the people, the need for a Manipuri Autonomous Council, the introduction of appropriate welfare schemes, declaration of holidays for important Manipuri festivals, and the protection and promotion of the Manipuri script. Several suggestions and opinions were placed on record during the discussions.
