Safer Internet Day held

Safer Internet Day, with this year’s theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’, was celebrated at Chandel district today.
Speaking at the opening of the one-day awareness program at the DC conference Hall, SDO Khengjoy, Gyasuddin Khan said that the internet has become a necessary evil in today’s tech-driven world. He expressed the need for every individual in all walks of life to take utmost precautions while accessing and using information provided through the websites on the internet, and learn to differentiate right and wrong information.
As part of the awareness program, District Informatics Officer, Chandel Ngamba Thokchom, presented a detailed presentation on the safer usage of the internet.
Today’s programme was attended by DLOs and other staffs of the district administration.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC), Bishnupur, under the overall supervision of the District Administration, Bishnupur, also organised Safer Internet Day, 2026 at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Bishnupur.
Speaking on the occasion, District Informatics Officer (DIO), Bishnupur, R.K. Romita, highlighted the various roles undertaken by NIC in the field of e-Governance and stressed the importance of observing Safer Internet Day. She stated that Safer Internet Day is observed on the second Tuesday of February every year, as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. She further informed that the theme for this year is “Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)”.
Addressing the gathering, Assistant Commissioner to the Deputy Commissioner, Bishnupur, Sh. Gunamani, stated that the objective of organising Safer Internet Day is to sensitise people about safer internet practices, digital awareness, and responsible use of online platforms.
The AC further mentioned that the observance of Safer Internet Day is highly relevant in the present digital era, where internet usage has become an integral part of daily life, especially among students and young users
During the programme, Kh. Kishore, DIO, Churachandpur, delivered a PowerPoint presentation on the topic, elaborating on internet safety, cyber awareness, and responsible use of emerging technologies.
N. Premila, Principal, JNV Bishnupur, along with teachers and students, also attended the programme.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC), Ukhrul under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) also organized “Safer Internet Day 2026” at Ukhrul Higher Secondary School today.
During the event K. Modar Maring, Scientist-C & DIO, NIC Ukhrul said, “The current youths and students must be aware of cybercrimes and practice cyber hygiene for securing the critical assets.” He further educated the students that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an advanced tool to which one should use wisely. As a Resource person his information covers on various topics like- About the Internet, Use of Internet in our Day-to-Day life, Safe Use of Internet (Internet Safety), Safe and Responsible use of AI, Common Cyber Threats of AI, Cyber Hygiene Practices and Mechanism to report cybercrimes.
The programme was attended by Josiah AS, Principal UHSS along with the teaching and non-teaching staffs and at least 200 school students.
