Students rally in Churachandpur against formation of popular govt in Manipur

Hundreds of students staged a massive protest rally in Manipur’s Churachandpur district today, opposing what they described as attempts to form a popular government without first addressing long-standing political demands and grievances.
The rally was organized by the Joint Students Organisation of Churachandpur and began from Lamka Public Ground before proceeding to the Wall of Remembrance. Amid tight security arrangements, student leaders submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur Seiminthang MCS.
In the memorandum, the students called for a comprehensive political solution to the ongoing crisis in Manipur before any move to constitute a popular government. They stated that justice must precede peace and cautioned that efforts to restore political normalcy without resolving core issues would only deepen mistrust and alienation among the people. The students alleged that despite prolonged unrest and unresolved concerns, priority was being given to political arrangements rather than meaningful and inclusive dialogue.
During the rally, students carried placards and raised slogans demanding a political solution, asserting that justice should come before power and peace. They maintained that without addressing fundamental political and social issues, any attempt to restore governance would remain incomplete and unsustainable.
The protest follows recent discussions by former Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party state unit president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi with the party’s central leadership in New Delhi on forming a popular government. Student leaders warned that similar democratic protests would continue unless concrete steps were taken to address their demands.
