MLA Lourembam Rameshwor calls for documentation of indigenous culture

Keirao Assembly Constituency MLA Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei today stressed the need to properly identify, document, and preserve the indigenous folk traditions, rituals, and cultural practices handed down by earlier generations, many of which, he said, remain inadequately recorded or understood today.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the release function of the book “Pukei Lan Geilaktgi Saknairaba Saknairabi Singgi Wari”, authored by Heikham Jadumani. The event was held at the Loktak Hall of the Manipur Press Club.
In his address, Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei said the present time demands greater awareness about cultural practices related to folk life, religious traditions, and social systems that were nurtured by ancestors. He observed that as society undergoes change, the emotional and cultural sensibilities rooted in traditional Keirao society can still be felt and understood if they are carefully preserved and passed on.
Referring to the book, the MLA said the author’s effort reflects genuine concern for artists living in different parts of the state and highlights the importance of documenting their stories and contributions. He added that safeguarding collective identity in all its forms should be a shared responsibility of the people.
He further remarked that despite Manipur being rich in cultural heritage, many local artists continue to remain under-recognised. While artists in other regions often receive due status and appreciation, Manipuri artists, he said, are yet to receive comparable recognition, even though Meitei culture holds a distinct place on the global cultural map. He pointed out that although Manipur’s Sankirtana has been recognised as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, sustained efforts are still required to ensure broader recognition and institutional support for the state’s cultural traditions.
The MLA expressed hope that publications documenting cultural practices from different regions would serve as an important step towards preserving heritage and raising awareness among future generations.
The programme was presided over by AMJU president Asem Bhakta. Artists featured in the book were also felicitated during the event, adding a celebratory note to the occasion.
