Students of Imphal College protest demanding translation books in local language

Students of Imphal College staged a human chain protest today on the college campus, holding placards and demanding that school and college textbooks and reference books be made available in the Manipuri language. The demonstration was organised under the initiative of the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) as part of its ongoing campaign to promote learning in the mother tongue.
During the protest, student representatives stated that despite Manipuri being included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, essential academic materials continue to remain unavailable in the language. They argued that students face challenges in understanding key concepts when textbooks are provided only in English or other languages.
A student leader participating in the demonstration said that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 clearly encourages teaching in the mother tongue at all levels to ensure deeper understanding and conceptual clarity among learners. He added that the failure to provide textbooks and reference materials in Manipuri contradicts the spirit of the NEP and disadvantages thousands of students across the state.
The protesting students urged concern government authorities to take immediate steps to publish and make available the textbooks and reference books in Manipuri. They also warned that similar demonstrations will continue if timely action is not taken.
