Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra Singh has strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for what he termed as “double standards” in the name of GST reforms.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Meghachandra recalled that the sudden introduction of “One Nation, One GST” in 2016 and its hasty implementation from July 1, 2017, caused severe hardships across the country, including Manipur. He said the GST regime, instead of simplifying taxation, brought “confusion, harassment, and unbearable financial burdens” on the public.
According to him, small traders, transporters, farmers, entrepreneurs, and self-employed workers were among the worst hit, while in Manipur, traditional handloom and handicraft artisans suffered significantly due to GST on both raw materials and finished products. Local weavers, small traders in Ima Keithel, and farmers faced major financial setbacks, while prices of essential goods also rose, burdening ordinary households.
Meghachandra alleged that the BJP is now attempting to divert attention from the damage caused by the GST regime by announcing a so-called “GST bonanza.” He described it as “a desperate political gimmick” that neither brings real relief to the people nor addresses the long-term impact on India’s federal spirit and Manipur’s economy.
