The National People’s Party (NPP) has voiced strong support for the repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, terming the law outdated and inconsistent with democratic and secular values.
The resolution was adopted during the Party’s National Committee and Annual General Meeting held at Tura on September 2, 2025. The NPP stated that the Act, in its current form, risks creating divisions, curtails individual liberty, and could be misused against citizens.
Citing Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice, and propagate religion, the party maintained that any legislation undermining these rights weakens the spirit of the Republic.
“The NPP stands firmly against restrictive laws and remains committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens,” the party said in a statement, adding that it will continue to uphold justice, equality, and peaceful coexistence.
Calling upon the Government of India to repeal the Act, the party stressed that protecting constitutional freedoms was essential to ensuring harmony and strengthening unity in the North East and the nation at large.
