VDF Welfare Association thanks SP Shivakanta for support

The Imphal West District VDF Employees Welfare Association has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Imphal West Superintendent of Police, Ksh. Shivakanta Singh, IPS, for providing essential supplies to 68 Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel deployed in high-risk and conflict-prone areas across the district.
In a press statement issued today, the association said the distribution of materials—including raincoats, torches, and other necessary items—was carried out under the supervision of the SP, acknowledging the pressing need to support VDF personnel who continue to perform critical duties under challenging conditions.
Amid the ongoing unrest in the state, including repeated threats and attacks on security installations, VDF personnel have been deployed at sensitive locations such as Kangchup Chingkhong, NSU Kotrucl, Leimakhong Co-Op, Laipart Paroa, and Kanglatombi. The deployments were made under the directive of SP Shivakanta Singh.
The association highlighted that, despite playing a crucial role in maintaining law and order alongside the state police, VDF personnel are often stationed in vulnerable zones without adequate protective gear, shelter, or basic amenities. They noted that many continue to operate from makeshift camps lacking even minimum facilities such as lighting, bedding, and food.
Referring to an incident in May 2023, where VDF personnel came under armed attack while on duty, the association reiterated its demand for equal recognition, privileges, and protections as enjoyed by regular police personnel. They cited the existing VDF Recruitment Rules, notified by the Home Department on June 4, 2008, and urged the state government to implement them without further delay.
The association lamented that VDFs, despite being frontline personnel, are still deprived of fair pay, job security, and welfare benefits. It called upon the state government to provide institutional support, ensure proper service conditions, and treat VDF personnel with the dignity and respect they deserve.
