Gorkha community urges PM Modi to reinstate N. Biren Singh as Manipur CM

The Nepali-speaking Gorkha community of Manipur has formally appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the reinstatement of N. Biren Singh as the Chief Minister of Manipur. In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Manipur Gorkha Union (MGU) emphasized the former CM’s significant contributions to peace, stability, and inclusive governance in the state.
Addressing the ongoing political vacuum in Manipur, the memorandum described Shri N. Biren Singh as a “People’s Chief Minister” and a visionary leader who upheld the values of peace and development, particularly for marginalized communities like the Gorkhas.
Bhanu Pratap Rai, President of the Manipur Gorkha Union, highlighted Biren’s efforts to reinstate several Gram Panchayats—including KoubruLeikha, Santalabari, Parsain, Toribari, and Kalapahar—which had been dissolved in 2012 by the previous Congress-led administration. These reinstatements, according to the Union, restored democratic governance at the grassroots level and empowered rural communities.
Biren’s tenure was further praised for promoting national integrity, law and order, and the protection of minority rights. “He stood firm against destabilizing forces and worked tirelessly to preserve Manipur’s delicate ethnic and communal harmony,” the memorandum stated.
Given the ongoing violence and instability in the region, the Gorkha community urged the central administration to provide continued support for the empowerment of minorities while advocating for the all indigenous and long-settled people of the region through the reinstatement of N. Biren.
The Union concluded its appeal with an expectation of a positive response through reaffirmation of faith in the central leadership’s commitment to inclusive development under the slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.”
