Imphal, March 19:
Even though there is no official confirmation, preparations are underway for a possible visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Manipur, nearly 22 months after the state plunged into an ongoing crisis. The Public Works Department (PWD), Government of Manipur, has initiated large-scale construction and renovation works, indicating that the Prime Minister’s visit could be imminent.
According to highly reliable sources, the state PWD has sanctioned a significant amount of funds for preparatory works, including the development of vehicle parking, gallery approach roads, and security arrangements at Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium. The department is also constructing a helipad and wooden barricades as part of the security protocol for the high-profile visit.
Additionally, the road from Khabam Lamkhai Maning to Chumbreithong is undergoing major improvements to accommodate VVIP movement, further suggesting that a high-level dignitary is expected in the state. The construction work has been expedited, with workers and engineers working round the clock to complete the infrastructure before the anticipated visit.
The speculated visit of Prime Minister Modi comes amid growing public demand for his intervention in the prolonged crisis that has gripped Manipur. Since the outbreak of violence in May 2023, the Prime Minister has neither visited the state nor made any strong statements regarding the crisis, drawing criticism from various sections of society.
While the state government remains tight-lipped, political observers believe that Modi’s visit—if confirmed—could signal a major policy shift in addressing Manipur’s turmoil. Security measures are being heightened in and around the capital as anticipation builds.
However, until an official announcement is made, the visit remains speculative, leaving the people of Manipur waiting for a much-needed response from the country’s highest leadership.
