Renowned veteran actor and filmmaker Diya Khwairakpam passed away today at the age of 57. Known for his exceptional contributions to cinema and theatre, Diya’s demise marks the end of an era in Manipuri entertainment.
Born into a family deeply rooted in theatre, Diya was the youngest son of Khwairakpam Momon and Khwairakpam Ongbi Bormani of Yumnam Leikai, Imphal West. His father, a senior drama artiste and director of Rupmahal Theatre, and his great-grandfather Nabakishore, a pioneer of drama in Manipur, played a significant role in shaping his artistic journey.
Diya started his acting career as a child at Panthoibi Natya Mandir before making his Manipuri film debut in “Lamphelpatki Kombirei” alongside actress Nirmala. Throughout his career, he starred in approximately 18 Manipuri celluloid films, setting a record among his peers. Some of his notable works include “Kombirei,” “Ingalei,” “Thambal,” “Sanamanbi Sanarei,” “Meiri,” “Hayengna Kanagino,” “Meiri Ama,” “Operation Sangai,” “Madhabee,” “Kanaga Hinghougani,” “Shiroi Lily,” and “Laibak,” his final film.

Chief Miniser N. Biren Condoles

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned Manipuri film actor and filmmaker Diya Khwairakpam, calling him a true icon of Manipuri cinema and theatre.
Taking to social media, the Chief Minister wrote, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of veteran actor Diya Khwairakpam, a true icon of Manipuri cinema and theatre.
His immense contributions to the world of art and culture have left an indelible mark on our society. His demise is an irreparable loss to the artistic fraternity and the people of Manipur. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Diya Khwairakpam was a celebrated figure in Manipuri cinema, known for his versatility and dedication to the arts. His passing has left a deep void in the cultural landscape of Manipur, with many from the film and theatre industry mourning the loss of a beloved artiste.

Apart from acting, Diya was a talented director, having helmed over 30 digital films, starting with “Phairenthagi Angaoba Leichil.” He was also actively involved in numerous telefilms, leaving a lasting imprint on Manipuri cinema.
In recognition of his talent, Diya was honoured with the Best Supporting Actor – Male award at the 15th Manipur State Film Awards 2023 for his role in the film “Akangba Nachom.”
His passing is an irreplaceable loss to the Manipuri film fraternity, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of artists.

Rajya Sabha MP condoles

Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba has expressed his condolences on the passing of veteran Manipuri actor and filmmaker Diya Khwairakpam. Taking to social media, the MP mourned the loss of the renowned artiste, acknowledging his significant contributions to Manipuri arts and culture.
In his heartfelt message, Maharaja Sanajaoba wrote: “What a sad news in this early morning! Renowned Manipuri Film Actor & Director Shri Diya Khwairakpam has passed away. His contribution in the field of Manipuri Arts & Cultures is commendable. My condolences to his bereaved family, friends & relatives and also share the same pains & sorrow. May the soul of Tamo Diya rest peacefully.”
Diya Khwairakpam, a respected figure in Manipuri cinema, was known for his remarkable performances and dedication to the growth of the film industry. His passing has left a deep void in the Manipuri artistic community, with fans and colleagues mourning his loss.
