Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) members staged a protest in front of the Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) office today, burning copies of the official calendar after spotting a contentious entry. The protest was sparked by the inclusion of “Kuki Rising Day” on October 17, which coincides with Mera Wayungba, a traditional festival.
KKL officials expressed outrage, accusing the DIPR of failing to recognize the historical and cultural significance of the date for the Meitei community. Dirash Hamom, KKL’s Media Coordinator, emphasized that there is no such day as “Kuki Rising Day” in Manipur’s cultural or historical landscape, questioning the rationale behind its inclusion in the state-issued calendar.
In response, the DIPR clarified that “Kuki Rising Day” was included in the calendar based on the official Gazette notification.
