Imphal, Aug 1:

Oinam Romen Singh, a prominent political activist from Singjamei Assembly Constituency, strongly condemned the use of tear gas by Manipur Police against Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) demanding immediate resettlement.
Romen Singh criticized the state government for failing to ensure the safe return of IDPs to their homes despite repeated assurances of steps towards normalcy. This failure led to the anger and frustration that sparked the mass rally in Imphal, where IDPs marched from Akampat Relief Camp to the Chief Minister’s residence.
Security forces attempted to stop the rally, but the IDPs managed to proceed. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, resulting in serious injuries to some protesters and a journalist.
Romen Singh condemned the police’s actions, questioning the bias shown by security forces in the valley areas compared to the hilly regions. He expressed concern over the assault on a journalist covering the rally, highlighting the issue of press freedom and the safety of media personnel in the state.
Romen Singh called for stringent action against the police personnel involved in the assault on the journalist.
