The reference of Manipur as ‘Powerhouse of sports in India’ is well deserved. The state has produced many international players to the country. Indian hockey player Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam of Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai is one of the promising players from the state.
Representing the country, she has participated in various international events including Hockey World cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games 2014 etc. Recently, Hockey India has named Manipur’s Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam in 18-member Indian women’s hockey team in the FIH World League Round-2 to be played at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi from 7- 15 March 2015. The league featuring eight teams is divided in Pool A and Pool B.
Talking to Imphal Times over phone, Sushila said that the team is undergoing rigorous practice sessions- morning and evening; and putting best efforts to clinch the trophy in the event.
Sushila who is a member of the Indian Women’s team is working as Ticket Collector in the Central Mumbai Railway.
Captained by midfielder Ritu Rani and India will be played against Ghana in its opening match scheduled for 7 March 2015.
India is placed in Pool A with Poland, Ghana and Thailand while Malaysia, Russia, Kazakhistan and Singapore are placed in Pool B.
While announcing the names of the Indian women’s squad, Mushtaque Ahmad, Secretary General, Hockey India said that the women team is full of confidence and an urge to win. They proved this during the recent Spain tour where they gave Germany a tough time. “Going by their present form I am sure the girls will continue their good show in the upcoming league and win”.
