‘Influx of illegal immigrants key issue of NE’

Imphal, Oct 4: Even as the state government of Manipur is yet to take up any decision on whether to pass a strict legislation for protection of the indigenous Manipuri people, neighbouring states which are already enforcing legislation like inner line permit system have started taking serious about the threats of illegal migrants.
Civil society in Manipur too is acting slow to press the government regarding the matter but the civil bodies of the neighbouring states are taking the issue with extreme seriousness.
As per report reaching here, the North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) said the influx of illegal immigrants into the North East states is one of the key issues that it would be raising with the legislature, executive and the judiciary of the country.
The decision was taken at the first meeting of the NEIPF, a conglomeration of various
organisations which include peace-bound militant outfits from the seven states of the North Easter region.
The meeting was held at the picturesque Orchid Lake resort at Umiam, about 15 km from Shillong. The Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People, one of the biggest social organisations from Meghalaya, was the host of the meeting chaired by the United Liberation Front of Assam General secretary Anup Chetia as the forum’s chief convenor.
On the other hand, Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has also urged the Nagaland state government to take up strict measures against the influx of Rohingyas at various part of the North East states including Nagaland.
A Statement from the CNTC media cell also said that the State Government’s law enforcement to detect and deport illegal immigrants was lax and ineffective.
Taking serious note of the recent spate of crimes by immigrants across the State, CNTC appealed to all tribal hohos and organizations of Nagaland not to remain as mute spectators anymore, but to join hands in curbing this danger for our children and their future.
Meanwhile, Assam police have arrested 6 Rohingyas from Karimganj district recently who entered into the state illegally. Talking to newspersons in Guwahati yesterday, Director General of Police, Mukesh Sahay said that on the basis of their information police arrested another three persons in Tripura for helping them to into the state. He said that all 9 persons are into the police custody now. He said that security agencies have taken all steps to prevent Rohingyas from sneaking into the state.
