Imphal, Sept 10: Freedom of press was restored in the neighbouring country Myanmar in the year 2012, two years after the country was replaced by a democratic form of government.
“After Myanmar become a democratic country in 2010, freedom of press was granted in 2012”, Aung Htun U, an advisory Board Member of Yangon Journalism School told to senior journalist Sivadutta Luwang.
He said earlier when there was military rule there were only two daily – one in Burmese language and the other in English and that too run by the Ministry of Information of the Myanmar government. A scrutiny board will censor every content of the news items for publishing it. However, the Scrutiny board has been abolished in 2012. Since then the taste of freedom of press emerges, Aung Htun U said.
He however said that, the Myanmar journalist still need to learn a lot on how the media will help the government. For that students from the Yangon Journalism schools are being sent to neighbouring countries for experiences.
