Shutdown affects life in Moreh

IMPHAL, May 23: The 24-hour total shutdown call given by social organisations in the border town underTengnoupal district on the India-Myanmar border over the killing of a woman labourer hit normal life on Tuesday.
Normal commercial activities in Moreh town came to a grinding halt as all shops and business establishments down shutters in the markets due to the strike that began from 8 pm of May 22.
A shanti Devi, 47, was shot dead by two unknown motorcycle borne assailants who opened fire on her at Moreh Gate No.4.
Moreh and Namphalong markets located on the fringe of Indo-Myanmar border wore a deserted look due to the shutdown.
Strike supporters burnt tyres on different roads to block traffic movement since early morning. No untoward incidents have been reported so far during the ongoingbandh which ends at 8 pm today.
Sources in the joint action committee (JAC) set up over the killing of Shanti said protest will continue unless the authority brings all culprits to book and punish within 24 hours.
The motive behind the killing is not yet known and the police are investigating it, sources informed.
Enraged by the fatal shooting incident, the Meetei Council Moreh, Hill Tribal CouncilMoreh, Manipur Muslim CouncilMoreh and other Moreh-based social organisationshad jointly announced the bandh to protest the killing.
Moreh residents have been angered by a series of incidents like bomb blasts and attack on security personnel recently happened in the town and its neighbouring villages. They are also angry with the Manipur government allegedly for not being able to curb violence in the town.
