At last, the Manipur University authority have conducted the MUSU election peacefully yesterday. Although the faith of the victimized suspended Professor and also the HOD of Computer Science Department is still uncertain since MU higher authority has not issued any official notification regarding revocation of the suspension order till date.
Nothing would be wrong in saying that Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) election has the highest degree of violence. The Union was even once dissolved on May 25, 2009 after Proctor of Manipur University Prof Md Islamuddin and former DEAN of student welfare was assassinated inside the campus of the University in board daylight
This year’s election was the second time to be held since the union was revoked. This time too, the degree of hostilities, sense of violence among so called student leaders of the rival contesting groups was easily noticeable on the first scheduled day of election that was on December 4.
The main cause of the problem this time, was the suspension of HOD of Computer Science Department following counter charge by one rival group about the submission of manipulated attendance record of a lady candidate from the Department and the resignation of election RO.
Regarding the attendance report, a source revealed that if one critically checked on the record of all the students contesting the election, none of the candidates might be eligible to contest in the election as none of the attendance records would not be up to the mark. It was also revealed that the lady who contested as Independent candidate was specially targeted as she denied accepting the proposal from the rival group to contest herself as their candidate eventually the lady supported by another main rival party.
On the other hand, the languages used and shouted by the so called student leaders and voter mobilizers during the agitation against non- voting arrangement after the RO had resigned were observed to be highly hostile and violent.
“Have you forgotten the last incident?”, “RO should be beaten up (RO netkadabani, fugadoubani, hatkadoubani)”, “Why should the election be cancelled for a girl, who is good for nothing?”, “Where is the VC, what the hell is he doing?” these are few abusive words shouted by the agitating student provoking other students for violent act.
On the day it was also observed that many students were uncomfortable to hear such kind of abusive, arrogant, hostile, violent and unsuited languages being used by students to their teachers.
Some of the students were even heard murmuring whether those using abusive language were real students of the University or not?
