Nation wide Trade Union strike paralyzes government offices in the state

Various trade unions and Co-coordinating body of trade union, Manipur has endorsed the 24-hour nationwide strike called by Central Trade Unions and Independent Federations in protest against changes in labour law and privatization of PSUs today.
Almost all government offices in the state were paralyze as employees joined the nationwide protest under the aegis of Co-ordinating Body of Trade Union, Manipur an apex body of (INTUC, AITUC, CITU, TUCC, UTUC, AICCTU, BMS, HMS, AITUTUC, SEWA and LPF).  Employees of banking, insurance, postal, telecom, transport, Anganwadi Workers, Teachers, construction workers, central and state government employees staged protest demonstration at various locations in Imphal and other district of the state.
Speaking to media, Laishram Sotinkumar of Coordinating Body of Trade Union said that the privatization policy of the government is a threat and would affect the poor and economically weaker section of the society. Privatization of BSNL, insurance companies, posts offices, railways and other PSUs would harden the lives of the poor and unemployed people.
The unions decided to go ahead with strike as their talks with a ministerial panel headed by finance minister Arun Jaitley last month did not make any headway on their 12-point charter of demands including withdrawal of the proposed changes in the labour laws and stopping the disinvestment and privatization of PSUs. Today’s nationwide strike by employees and workers is a sign of mass protest against the privatization policy of the government.
Convenor of Coordinating Body of Trade Union, Shanta said that rights of the workers and labours could not be snatched away by the government. He also demanded to the central government to take urgent measures to contain price rise, contain unemployment, strict enforcement of basic labour laws, stopping of FDI in railways and defence and universal social security cover for all workers.
Members of All Indian Post Office Trade Union, Manipur Division also went on strike to protest the anti-labour, anti-people policies of the central government. Staffs of Post office staged a protest at the premise of Post Office Head Office and sought various slogans against the privatization policies.
Vice-president of the postal union, M Gojendro said that their main demand is to implement 7th pay commission and Rs 3000 pension for workers, stoppage of disinvestment in PSUs.
The strike affects paralyses normal life in the state as the banking facilities shut today as employees nationalised banks, private sector banks, cooperative banks, regional rural banks went on protest. Post office and telecom departments also closed due to the strike.
