Guwahati, Nov. 24: Another issue of disgusting behaviour against people from Northeast has come to light and this time it happened at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium during Indian Supper League match.
Few youths from NE were allegedly harassed in the stadium by some locals during the ongoing ISL match between the North East United FC and Chennaiyin FC. This was revealed in a video which recently went viral. It was seen that few people from NE were being harassed by some locals from Chennai.
Talking about the issue, Savio Diamary who was present at the stadium at the time said, “We had gone to support our North East United FC play against Chennaiyin FC in the ongoing ISL 2017-18 season. I agree that there is nothing wrong with trolling and making fun of supporters of opposition team, but abusing girls is something which is beyond that limit.”
He further added that even last year, two of his friends were beaten up at the same venue but they did not bring it to the public domain but this time they intentionally came to a stand where a sizeable number of NEUFC fans were watching the game.
He added, “They blocked us by standing in front of our seats. They just wanted us to react so that they can beat us.”
It was further seen that while other people were standing right there and enjoying the mockery, the Girl herself had to push away the hooligan.
Another student posted, “These hooligans should be condemned but please avoid using any racist remarks. We were surrounded by them and they were many. These two girls and the two guys with them were resilient enough to remain calm because they knew how to handle the situation. Or else the situation would have further aggravated.”
He added that fortunately, the actions of these hooligans were confined to taunts, trolls and provocation. There wasn’t any physical assault and about those asking why the people around them didn’t react, they just knew what to do at that moment, to prevent it from escalating.
He added that asking for help or jumping into action wasn’t possible for that moment as there wasn’t any police nearby and the best they could do to handle the situation was not to respond to their provocations.
President of the North East Indian Welfare Association has assured to take legal actions agaist them.
