Intolerable crimes

It was in the state assembly session that deputy chief minister Gaikhangam who is also incharge of the Home department stated that the NCSN-IM have committed as many as 400 crimes since it had signed cease fire agreement with the government of India. But the ironical part is that none of the people of the state were surprised by the Deputy Chief Minister’s statement. But one thing that is let known to the people of the state is that, this time the Okram Ibobi Singh led congress government had shown enough courage this time by officially recognizing the criminal activities of the NSCN-IM.

The statement was made in the aftermath of the killing of one ADC member of Ukhrul Ngalangzar Malue by cadres of NSCN-IM. Unlike other similar incidents at which NSCN-IM was allegedly involved, the state government had taken strong stand against the unprecedented action of the outfit and conducted a full swing operation owing to the crackdown of a technical head quarter of NSCN-IM located at Ukhrul town. It didn’t take long for the state force to locate the technical camp of the outfit which remained unnoticed for nearly 12 years.

Surprisingly during the last around 12 years, the Ibobi government had not spelled out a single wrong committed by the outfit. Be it the series of ambushed to its MLA Wungnoasung Keishing or Preshaw Shimray, the government had not directly pin pointed the NSCN-IM even though it was known to even a minor boys of the state.

There were numerous complaints by private transport bodies operating in the National Highways about the extortion or imposition of illegal taxes to the trucks and buses. Receives note of the illegal taxes collected from the transporters had been produced many a times to the notice of the concern government but no action was seen initiated against the outfit. Even after knowing that the Kassom Khullen SDO and his two subsidiary staffs were slaughtered by the outfit, the state government had to wait for the CBI to handle the case.

After the incident at which the ADC member was ambushed and killed by the NSCN-IM, the Chief Minister’s statement which said the activities of the outfit “out of tolerance” might have received applause but why was he had soft corners to the outfit when the similar kind of criminal activities were committed by the outfit.

Leave aside other unseen crimes. It is known that the NSCN-IM has been collecting huge amount of illegal tax from the transporters of the state but the silence regarding this seems to have indicated that this kind of extortions can be tolerated. It is now time to remember the proverb – hit the iron when it is hot.
